A new recruit to the Corps, Tarkus Whin found his first day as a Green Lantern would also be his last. The star 1417.196 had been showing signs of instability. While planning the evacuation of the fifth planet in the system, the star went nova days earlier than expected. The worlds circling 1417.196 were incinerated and the star quickly collapsed into a black hole. The massive gravitational forces pulled Tarkus Whin into the black hole through to Space Sector 2828. He was unable to use his power ring to protect himself and was killed. As per its programming, Whin's power ring began to scan Sector 1417 to seek a worthy replacement.
Tarkus Whin's remains were found by his reluctant successor, Doctor Soranik Natu of Korugar. She did not want the power ring but she wished to mark Tarkus Whin's passing. Traveling to the site of his demise she also found herself trapped, but through some clever forethought was able to prevent her death. She made it appear she had not survived. Their bodies were picked over by a cadre of bounty hunters searching for Green Lanterns before being dumped in an organic recycling station in the Vega system, in sector 2828.

Some time later, Green Lanterns of Earth Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner came to Vega searching for the missing Natu. The Green Lantern of Korugar was revived and before she left Vega performed a ceremony to honor Tarkus Whin, incinerating the fallen Green Lantern's body. Though natives of Korugar had no love for the Corps, Soranik Natu decided to remain a Green Lantern in memory of Tarkus Whin.
