HISTORY

Though a talented illustrator, Sebastian Beale's work never received the recognition it deserved. Beale did a handful of paperback covers for small publishers in the 1960s but remained unfulfilled. He had poured his soul into his art but felt no one wanted a part of it.

On a sheet of blank canvas, Beale created the land of Najida. His imagination was so strong the painting became real. Beale was able to reach the land of Najida and eventually withdrew from the real world to live out the rest of his life inside his fantasy world.

Over the years, Beale grew tired and his condition was reflected in the land of Najida. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, storms and floods ripped at the inhabitants of Beale's world.

To the people of Beale's world he was the God-Mage. In the land of Jeth, the Royal Daughter Saria Amenthis of the Royal Court Jeth was charged by her father to seek out the God-Mage and petition him to spare their world. The Kingdom of Jeth was scattered by the many disasters, and the volcanic eruptions threatened the lives that were left.

Saria's party was crossing the mountains when Kyle Rayner fell into the world of Najida from the outside world. His arrival startled the giant lizards Saria's party used. She and other members of the party were thrown into the path of the oncoming lava.

Rayner, being Green Lantern, tried to save them but found using his ring transformed his costume. He was unable to use his ring properly, it would not respond to his specific commands. Rayner decided to let the ring choose what form it wanted for the energy constructs. A simple rope, rather than a complex crane, created from the emerald energy pulled Saria to safety.

By the time they had regrouped, most of Saria's party had been lost. Her Tuk-Hai, or protectors, Eth-Haj and Eth-Neht, had been bred for strength and loyalty and were sworn to protect their princess. It was Eth-Pahk who had sacrificed his life to keep Saria from burning in the lava.

Rayner decided it was best if he used his ring sparingly, concerned he might be in Najida for quite sometime. Without his power battery he would have no way to recharge the ring if he needed it to get home.

From the land of Jeth, they traveled through the ruins of Mapoor and into the waters of the Breathing Sea. In the city beneath the Breathing Sea, the Empress Faashis donated her greatest warrior, Stresha, to aid them on their quest.

They left the Breathing Sea to climb the treetops of Arburus. The five travelers spent months on their journey, crossing the Whirling Desert and then through vast canyons and the Glowing Cave before coming within sight of World's End and the God-Mage's floating palace.

Climbing the chain which anchored the palace to the ground, they found even the palace was no refuge from the white voids which were engulfing Najida. They finally entered the God-Mage's inner sanctum, which Rayner recognized as an artist's studio. Sebastian Beale was worshipped by the inhabitants of his fantasy world.

Though Rayner admired Beale's work, he did not share his friends' awe of the so-called "God-Mage." Rayner knew he had to get Beale to save the world of Najida. Even with the power ring of Green Lantern, Rayner could not save Najida on his own. Beale was astounded to see someone from the outside world, but he had given up, feeling it was too late to save his fantasy world. Undaunted, Rayner tried to recreate Najida by himself.

Inspired by Rayner's attempt, Beale added his will power to Rayner's. Through the power ring and their imaginations they not only restored Najida but created a new world. Rayner had used the last of his power ring's energy and believed himself trapped forever inside the painting. Revitalized, Beale now had the strength to return Rayner to the outside world, though Beale decided he would remain in Najida.

Back in his apartment in New York City, Rayner found no time had passed at all while he was in the painting. The only traces of his adventure in Najida was an empty power ring and the painting had changed. Sebastian Beale and his world of Najida have not been seen since. - Green Lantern Annual Vol. 3 #6

GLCWP NOTE

Looking at the map of Najida on page 19, I noticed something odd about the compass points. Instead of the regular N for North, S for South, the compass is lettered (going counterclockwise) K-D-R-M. Is this for Kevin Dooley, Ron Marz?
