HISTORY

A noble scientist on his homeworld of Calphonus, Tri Vul dedicated his life to assisting his world. He established a research station in the radioactive sands of Calphonus' Desert of Gold. Months later, he realized he was slipping into madness. The combined effect of the radioactive sands and the emanations of Calphonus' black moon created a split personality in Tri Vul.

The scientist scoured the universe for a cure for his affliction and finally found it on Earth. A meteorite had fallen to Earth centuries before and was now wedged in a fault in the bedrock beneath Gotham City. The super dense material of the meteorite held the fault from slipping. Tri Vul travelled to Earth to take a sample of the glowing meteorite but the madness set in and he took the entire meteorite, knowing it would cause death and destruction in Gotham City.

The removal of the meteorite caused tremors measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale and caught the attention of the Batman. Even if a rock of equal size were to replace the meteorite, it would not be strong enough to stabilize the fault. Gotham City's Dark Knight Detective discovered the involvement of an extraterestrial and vowed to return the meteorite.

The theft was also noticed by the Guardians of the Universe. Though they did not understand Tri Vul's motive, they dispatched Hal Jordan, Green Lantern of Earth, to apprehend Tri Vul. The scientist would stand trial on Oa. The Guardians warned Green Lantern that Batman was tracking Tri Vul as well.

The heroes reluctantly agreed to work together to capture Tri Vul but each had his own plan. Batman believed Tri Vul should face charges on Earth while Green Lantern planned to take Tri Vul to face the Guardians' judgement.

The two heroes were not welcomed on Calphonus, but the Elders would not interfere with their search. They considered Tri Vul their greatest scientist and philosopher but also respected the Guardians of the Universe.

Green Lantern and Batman separated to find Tri Vul. Left alone, Batman became a target for the Calphonians and had to feign defeat at their hands, rather than risk assaulting the native population. From their conversation afterwards, Batman deduced Tri Vul was in the Desert of Gold.

The emerald warrior had been keeping a sharp eye on his fellow Justice Leaguer and followed the Batman to Tri Vul's research station. He arrived just in time, as Tri Vul was stronger than he looked. The crazed scientist was choking the Batman before Gren Lantern knocked him out with a power ring fist.

Now that Tri Vul was defeated, the heroes resumed their rivalry over were the criminal should be prosecuted. The Dark Knight overcame the emerald warrior's power ring with a yellow filtered laser beam. One punch knocked out Green Lantern.

Tri Vul came to on the trip back to Earth. He was visibly upset to learn he had committed crimes and tried to escape from his shame. It was at that point that Batman realized Tri Vul was not responsible for his evil deeds. The Dark Knight had no time to take action on his discovery. His starcraft was boarded by Chaselon and Zborra, members of the Green Lantern Corps. Batman told the Lanterns that he would defend Tri Vul on Oa.

The Calphonian confessed to his crimes but could not recall where he had left the meteorite from Gotham, as that happened in his evil phase. The only clue the Dark Knight detective had was that the crimes occured under the Black Moon. From that, he deduced Tri Vul had left the object on the Black Moon.

Green Lantern and Batman brought Tri Vul back to the moon and took the meteorite to Gotham City. At the last possible instant, Green Lantern replaced the meteorite in the bedrock beneath the city. The earthquakes stopped and Gotham was saved. - The Brave and the Bold #155

Presumably, Tri Vul returned to Calphonus and to his life as a scientist. Tri Vul has not been heard of since.
